Dear Shrevewood parents, students, and staff,

The Region 2 Office is pleased to announce that Mr. Josh DeSmyter has been named the new principal of Shrevewood Elementary School.

Mr. DeSmyter is currently the assistant principal at Freedom Hill Elementary; prior to his time at Freedom Hill, he was the assistant principal at Franklin Sherman Elementary from 2014-2019.  Prior to coming to Fairfax County Public Schools in 2011, Mr. DeSmyter taught elementary school in Washington DC as well as Detroit, Michigan where he was named the Outstanding Teacher of the Year.  Mr. DeSmyter has been an educator for 12 years.

Mr. DeSmyter is a collaborative leader who is purposeful and intentional in working with staff, parents, and community members in an effort to increase rigor for all students. He is a leader who focuses on celebrating success because he believes this ultimately builds community.  He recognizes the multiple nationalities, cultures, and different perspectives of a school community and works diligently to listen to all stakeholders. Creating and maintaining a positive school culture is a top priority for him.  He understands the importance of a welcoming and inclusive school culture and he also understands the importance of open, transparent communication with all. Mr. DeSmyter is a visible leader who is available and present for the students, staff, and community.

Mr. DeSmyter brings a deep understanding of the Columbia Teacher’s College approach to the Reading and Writing Workshop. In addition, he implemented the Math Workshop model at a large scale during his tenure at Franklin Sherman ES.  Mr. DeSmyter has experience in supporting, promoting, and enhancing multiple programs: such as Advanced Academics and Special Education.  In his previous experience, he helped establish a Local Level IV AAP program and infused the AAP curriculum in all classrooms, grades 3-6, which led to increased rigor for all students. He is also a proponent of The Positivity Project and has seen first-hand that behavioral support programs that emphasize positive behavior lead to a decrease in discipline referrals and a better environment for all stakeholders.

Mr. DeSmyter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Spring Arbor University as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership from George Mason University.  Mr. DeSmyter also holds an endorsement in Educational Administration and Supervision, Prek-12.

Please join me in welcoming Mr. DeSmyter as the new principal of Shrevewood Elementary School.

Fabio Zuluaga, Ed.D.
