Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

It may have been a short week, but the warm weather and sunshine brought bright spirits to Shrevewood Elementary. Our 6th grade students enjoyed a thrilling visit to Kilmer Middle School for their orientation. They are buzzing with excitement about their upcoming transition! Huge congratulations to Harry, Jadon, Charlotte, Eli, Emily, and Josie for showcasing their incredible work and experiences with the Global Classroom Project at the GCP Showcase at Robinsons Secondary School! We are incredibly proud of these students and their dedication, and we extend a special thank you to Ms. Daniels, Ms. Jones, Ms. Tucker, and Ms. Pinkerton for their continuous support and enrichment of these young minds through these learning opportunities.

Next week, students in grades 3-6 will be participating in the Reading SOL testing. Please ensure your child brings their laptop and charger to school on testing days. Encourage a good night's sleep the night before the test to ensure they feel well-rested and ready to shine. Our dedicated teachers and students have been working diligently all year long. We have full confidence in their capabilities and know they will succeed in these assessments.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

International Night - June 6th Health Room Notice

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than 2:00 pm, student dismissal time, on the last day of school, June 12. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school.

Parent Input re: Class Placement

We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success, and we carefully consider each child’s strengths and needs during the class creation process.  While we do not accept requests for individual teachers by name, we encourage parents to share information school staff should be aware of to aid in the process of creating classes for the 2024-2025 school year. Keep in mind parent input is one source of information used to create classes. Classes are not finalized until mid-August.

If you have multiple children at Shrevewood, please fill out a separate form for each child. Please submit your input by Friday, May 17, so your submission can be considered prior to conversations with school staff. Thank you!

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Leadership. Leadership means you value each member of your group and inspire people to do their best.

Leadership can be both formal and informal. It is concerned with getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future. This character strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders rather than the practice of leadership. These qualities include the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal, the capacity to mitigate conflict and mold consensus, and the desire to lead other people.

For individuals, leadership is a way to achieve what you know is important, as groups of people invariably achieve more than individuals. If you want to achieve your vision for the future, you need to inspire others to join you. As an individual’s ability to lead develops, so does that person’s confidence and sense of self-efficacy.

To practice and encourage the character strength of leadership with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions.

Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Jewish American Heritage Month

May is a national month of recognition of the history of Jewish contributions to American culture, acknowledging the diverse achievement of the Jewish community in the U.S.

Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Prearranged Absences

Parents are encouraged to minimize student absences during school hours and to plan family trips and vacations during school holidays. If a student will be absent for more than one day, parents should submit a prearranged absence request, so teachers and administrators are alerted to the absence reasons and a plan to handle missed work is developed. Requests for prearranged absences for longer than one school day must be submitted to the school office within a reasonable time (three to five school days in advance) for the principal to review. Prearranged absence requests for periods longer than five school days must be reviewed to prevent student absences from becoming chronic and to avoid withdrawal from school. Student absences can have a significant impact on learning, and priority must be given to ensure that students attend school regularly.

Change in Transportation Protocol

If playdates are planned, the Shrevewood office team must receive notifications from the parents of all students involved.  Playdate notifications may be made via the online Change in Transportation Form or via an email sent to [email protected]. For any changes in transportation, please make sure to contact the office no later 3:00 pm.

Procedures when you come to join your children for lunch:
  • Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.
  • Using a government issued photo ID, you must sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.
  • Please ensure you are wearing the visitor sticker at all times.
  • Report directly to the cafeteria.
  • Enjoy lunch with your children.
  • Return to the main office to check-out using your sticker.
  • Lunch visitors should not go to the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue for our students.
  • We ask that you not bring fast food for lunch.
  • Please do NOT bring any food to share with other children, due to safety protocols and allergies.
🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, please notify his/her teacher, so assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Enthusiasm.  Enthusiasm means you approach life with excitement and energy. You energize people around you.

Enthusiasm is the ability to bring life and excitement to different situations. It often leads to a higher level of involvement and engagement both for individuals and for groups. Those who demonstrate enthusiasm bring an energy and level of intensity to individual and group work. These people are often identified as early leaders and innovators as a result of their outward excitement about a task or project. Look for these people to recruit new group members and generate ideas.

For groups, enthusiasm can be directly tied to high levels of success, happiness, and achievement. Enthusiasm is contagious. One person’s enthusiasm can spark others to think, speak, and act with more energy and conviction. Groups that are enthusiastic about tasks are much more likely to spend longer periods of time in service to the group’s overall goals.

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence means you notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. You don’t take things for granted.

Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence is the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, a song, or building); an exceptional skill or talent; and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciation of beauty can generate awe; appreciation of a skill can generate admiration; and appreciation of moral goodness can generate moral elevation. All of these feelings (awe, admiration, and moral elevation) help us forget ourselves and find increased joy and meaning in the world.

Appreciating excellence and beauty helps an individual experience positive emotions and connect to the world around them. It’s an outward facing strength, meaning the individual is focused on the world outside their head. Not only is the individual outwardly focused, but often deeply absorbed in a sense of awe or admiration, freeing them to forget anxieties and troubles. It's also associated with other strengths, such as gratitude, curiosity, love of learning, and purpose.

To practice and encourage the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

This award recognizes staff or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1, 2024.  The winner will be recognized at the FCPS Equity Symposium.

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Purpose. Purpose means you have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.

Purpose gives individuals the sense that they are put on this earth for a reason and that they are somehow connected with humanity or the universe. People who possess a sense of purpose believe that they were put on earth for a reason. That reason can have all kinds of variety. It could be to create a unique invention, bring joy through art or music, or raise their children to become good people. These people have a true calling.

Having a clear sense of purpose in life and believing that you’re connected to a larger meaning gives individuals strength. It allows them to persevere and find courage in trying circumstances or lead with kindness and love even when it’s not reciprocated. Those with a sense of purpose have more meaning in their life -- and are more fulfilled.

To practice and encourage the character strength of purpose with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We trust you and your family enjoyed a rejuvenating Spring Break and are now ready for an exciting 4th quarter of school. A heartfelt thank you to all the families who joined us today for our Kindergarten Orientation event. If you were unable to attend, please refer to the newsletter for details on registering your child for the 2024-2025 school year.

With the weather warming up and summer approaching, we rely on your support to ensure all our Owls are present and engaged in learning every day. This quarter promises a wealth of exciting learning opportunities and events, and we want all our students to be part of these experiences. Let's make the most of this spring together!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Solar Eclipse at Shrevewood

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04PM and end around 4:32PM, with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20PM.

While witnessing such a celestial event can be awe-inspiring and educational, it is crucial that we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students above all else. Shrevewood will not be sending students outside to view the eclipse. Instead of viewing the eclipse outside, students and staff will be provided with the NASA livestream link as an option to safely observe the eclipse.

There will be some overlap of the expected window and Shrevewood dismissal. Students will be reminded to not stare at the sun, and we ask that parents remind their children that it is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.

FCPS has a page that shares information about Solar Eclipses at https://www.fcps.edu/solar-eclipse

Month of the Military Child

We invite the Shrevewood community to recognize the resilience of our military-connected children during April, the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take this opportunity to celebrate our military-connected children and thank them for their service as part of a military family.

Throughout April, FCPS schools will celebrate MOMC through various special events and activities to recognize military-connected youth. One of the most visible displays of support for military-connected youth occurs on Purple Up! Day, a day dedicated to showing appreciation by wearing purple – to represent the combined colors of branches of the military.  Please join FCPS for Purple Up! Day on April 17, 2024, as we proudly wear purple as a sign of our appreciation.

The Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Staff Appreciation Week

Staff Appreciation Week (SAW) is May 6th-10th and our PTA committee is hard at work arranging meals, games, raffle prizes, and more! Please visit the PTA Staff Appreciation Week website to see the different ways to support and sign up to help show our Shrevewood owl-stars how much we appreciate them and make the week a success!

Dining for Dollars - April 10 Prearranged Absences

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.

Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

April is Autism Acceptance Month

This year, the National Institute of Mental Health is providing resources in honor of Autism Acceptance Month.  These resources highlight and focus on inclusivity and connectedness and honor the unique perspectives of people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

ASD is known as a “spectrum” disorder because there is wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience.

National Arab American Heritage Month

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the remarkable history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

National Muslim American Heritage Month

Muslim American Heritage Month is a time for celebrating the history, contributions, culture, and an enhanced understanding of the diverse population of Muslim Americans. View the Fairfax County School Board resolution honoring Muslim American Heritage Month.

Techstravaganza 2024

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humor. Humor means you like to laugh and bring smiles to other people.

Humor is a sense of playfulness and lightness. It is a way of looking at and describing the world that brings laughter to people. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others, and identifying and communicating the absurdities in life. People with this strength don’t specifically need to be joke tellers, although many are.

Humor plays an important role in helping groups of people rise above difficult circumstances and boost morale. It removes us from our present difficulties by easing tension and making life more fun. This is why athletic teams often need a jokester to help them get through tough losses and early morning fitness sessions. On a larger societal level, humor often helps downtrodden groups to find cohesion and strength. This is why Simon Wiesenthal said, “Humor is the weapon of unarmed people: it helps people who are oppressed smile at the situation that pains them.”

To practice and encourage the character strength of humor with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

What an incredible week of learning, fun, and excitement it has been here at Shrevewood! Our second-grade students embarked on a thrilling field trip to Imagination Stage, while our News Crew students had an enriching visit to the WJLA Station. Additionally, all students were treated to a captivating preview of the sixth-grade musical earlier today.

Looking ahead, please note that from March 25th to the 29th, we will be observing Spring Break. Our and school and offices will be closed during this time. We extend our warmest wishes to our students and teachers for a happy and rejuvenating Spring Break! Our office will reopen on Monday, April 1st, but please be aware that there will be no school for students on April 1st and 2nd due to scheduled school planning and teacher work days.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Kindergarten Orientation - April 2 at 2:00 p.m.

We will host our Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, April 2nd, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event is designed for parents and rising kindergarten students to gain insights into what kindergarten entails at Shrevewood. Participants will have the opportunity to explore classrooms, meet our dedicated staff, and begin forming connections with future classmates. We look forward to welcoming our rising Kindergarten families to this informative and engaging event.

If you have a rising Kindergarten student, please fill out this new student intake form to begin the registration process. If you have a neighbor or friend with a child who will be turning five on or before September 30th, please pass along this information!

If you have any questions about the registration process, reach out to our Student Information Assistant, Sebastian Brennan, at [email protected].

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

✅ Last Chance to Take the Family Engagement Survey!

If you haven’t already, please take FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey today! Survey results will help us to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community. The survey is available in 10 languages. Your voice matters! Please participate now.

Techstravaganza 2024

Techstravaganza is a free, public, hands-on STEM activity fair for elementary and middle school students in Northern Virginia. In previous years, we've hosted more than 4,500 students and 70 labs presenting STEM activities. Our exhibitors range from TJHSST clubs and our own TWIST volunteers to organizations like NASA SCaN, Art of Problem Solving, George Mason University, American Society of Naval Engineers, and the National Air and Space Museum. This year, we will be holding the 20th annual Techstravaganza on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PM at TJHSST.

Admission is free, food will be for sale, and we hope that you can spread the word in your school. Here is the registration link: https://tinyurl.com/techstrav24. More information about the event can be found on our website at tjtechstrav.org.

National Women’s History Month

Every year, March is designated as Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions to American history. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Read more about Women’s History Month in National Geographic Kids.

When we return from Spring Break, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Fairness. Fairness means you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.

Fairness is the product of moral judgement — the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.

For individuals, cultivating the character strength of fairness is correlated with highly desirable developmental outcomes. It helps people to become trustworthy friends, responsible citizens, and generally moral people.

To practice and encourage the character strength of fairness with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

Thank you to all the parents who joined us for our recent PTA meeting. We were fortunate to have our Reading Specialist, McKenzie Senick, discuss her role at Shrevewood. For those who couldn't attend, the slides are found at the link from Ms. Senick's presentation.

We're eagerly anticipating our Zoo-to-You assembly tomorrow and can hardly believe that next week marks the end of the 3rd quarter. As a friendly reminder, our Bingo Night is scheduled for tomorrow evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. There will be delicious pizza and baked goods available for purchase, along with numerous raffle prizes. We're hoping to see all of our Shrevewood families there for what promises to be a memorable and enjoyable event.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others. It’s important to deliberately work to identify and appreciate others’ character strengths.

Identifying and appreciating the good in others is a core tenet of the Other People Mindset. This isn’t always what comes naturally. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment. The problem is that this negativity usually leads to problems -- for ourselves, for the other person, and for our relationships.

Identifying and appreciating the good in other people helps you see the world through a more positive -- and less threatening -- lens. If you’re constantly seeing the negative traits of people, you’re going to think the world is comprised of bad people -- and you’re going to operate from a defensive posture. This isn’t to say that we should be naive or see the world, and its people, through “rose-colored glasses.” It’s just that we should strive to understand people’s intent. If you see the good in another, they are likely to see the good in you.

To practice and encourage the character strength of identifying and appreciating the good in others with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

Next week, we hope you will be able to join us for our PTA Meeting on Tuesday, March 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. We are excited to welcome our Reading Specialist, McKenzie Senick, who will share insights about her role at our school, provide an overview of the literacy block in our classrooms, and discuss resources and strategies for families to support literacy outside of school. If you are unable to join us in person, you can join the meeting via Zoom. We look forward to seeing you there!

Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., when daylight saving time begins! We are excited to have additional daylight in the evenings!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Lightspeed Classroom Management Tool

Our school will be using a new classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. The new tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school.

Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

If you have any questions about Lightspeed, please contact our School Based Technology Specialist, Kaylin Daniels, at [email protected].

Baroody Spring Session

It is time to sign up for the Baroody Spring Session! Registation is currently open and will close on March 17th. Check out the class offerings and register here.

Spring Portraits & Class Pictures

Spring pictures are on Tuesday, March 12th. Order forms can be found in your child's Thursday Folder this week. You can also find the information below.

First Full Day of Ramadan

The first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day, while striving to increase their spirituality through prayers, charity, and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

✅ Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

🧸 Kindergarten Registration Information🧸

It's hard to believe that we are already planning for next school year and welcoming our newest Wise Owls in Kindergarten. If you have a rising Kindergarten student, please fill out this new student intake form to begin the registration process. If you have a neighbor or friend with a child who will be turning five on or before September 30th, please pass along this information!

Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

As we get ready for another exciting week at Shrevewood, I wanted to share some important information and events happening in our community.

Next week, we celebrate National School Social Work Week and want to give a special shout out to our school social worker, Ms. Heather Colby. This week provides us with an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions that Ms. Colby provides our students, staff, and community. She plays a crucial role in supporting the social, emotional, and academic well-being of our students. Thank you, Ms. Colby!

We also are looking forward to kicking off our Book Fair on Tuesday, March 5th! Since Tuesday is a School Planning Day for staff, we will have the Book Fair open from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. for the community. The Book Fair offers an exciting array of books for all ages and interests. Encourage your children to explore the wonders of reading and discover new stories to ignite their imaginations. Don't miss this opportunity to foster a love for reading within our school community. More information can be found about volunteer opportunities for the Book Fair in the newsletter.

In addition to these highlights, we have a busy week ahead filled with engaging learning opportunities and enriching activities. As always, we encourage our students to approach each day with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. We hope you have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

Next week, our school community will be celebrating the Positivity Project in fun and different ways in their classrooms. The week is focused on engaging students and learning more about positive psychology and how it impacts their relationships with others.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Per the weather reports, the cold winds of winter are blowing in this week. Throughout the winter weather, FCPS and Shrevewood monitor the weather for very low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. At this time, it is our intention to have outdoor recess opportunities this week.

Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and/or other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, our Social Worker, Heather Colby ([email protected]), can assist you. You can also call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. The multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.

Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We had a fantastic time last night at our Family Science Night event here at Shrevewood! A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Malave for organizing the event, the PTA for their support, and all of our amazing staff and community volunteers. It was truly inspiring to witness our students and families actively participating in hands-on activities and exploring the realms of science and engineering.

Additionally, I want to commend our students for their excellent performance during yesterday's bus evacuation drill. It's always reassuring to see them take these drills seriously and practice with diligence. While we hope they never have to use these skills in a real emergency, we take comfort in knowing that they are well-prepared if the need arises.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means you master new topics on your own or in school.

Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize of a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.

Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities, or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health. Additionally, individuals who love learning have the desire and ability to overcome challenges, due to a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.

To practice and encourage the character strength of love of learning with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

This week has been great at Shrevewood, and we enjoyed spreading lots of love around the school yesterday. Thank you to all who purchased a CandyGram and also to our volunteers for supporting the CandyGram fundraiser. We are happy to report that we had over 1,500 CandyGrams distributed throughout our school to students and staff!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our PTA meeting on Tuesday. It was a pleasure to share our midyear celebrations regarding our students' growth in reading, math, and social-emotional wellness. We eagerly anticipate our upcoming PTA meetings this year, where you'll have the chance to hear directly from our resource staff about their invaluable roles at Shrevewood and the incredible support they provide to our students and staff.

As a reminder, all schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 19, for the Presidents Day holiday. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable long weekend.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Lockdown Drill

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training. They are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. All students will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Save the Date: Spring Book Fair, March 4th - 8th

You will get to try different hands-on activities related to science, technology, engineering, and math.

To make the night a success, we need YOU! Please consider volunteering at the event to help run one of the activities! Sign up here.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information about eating disorders to parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades annually.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Lunch & Learn with Cultured Kids

Enjoy community and a catered lunch with Culture Kids on February 17th from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Elementary Magnet School Application and Lottery Information

The Magnet Program registration window will be open from Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12, 2024.  No late applications are accepted.

To learn more about the programs and the registration process, families are encouraged to attend one of the Parent Information Nights:

  • Bailey’s Upper, February 6, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. (Virtual only)
  • Hunters Woods Elementary, February 12, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. (In-person)
    • Snow date: February 26, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.
  • Bailey’s Primary, February 13, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. (In-person)
    • Snow date: February 21, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humility. Humility means you do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves.

Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated) sense of their abilities and achievements. They hold the capacity to acknowledge their mistakes and limitations and are open to advice and new ideas. They do not show off their possessions or accomplishments.

Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team.

To practice and encourage the character strength of humility with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love. Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people.

The character strength of love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships. When one person loves another person, that person: comforts and makes the other feel safe; sacrifices on the other’s behalf; supports the other during struggles; and places the others' needs ahead of their own. If you love a person, that person makes you feel safe and secure. You can be yourself with that person. You miss that person when they are not around.

On a group level, love is vital for the wellbeing of society. The world is endlessly interconnected. We are all dependent upon each other for survival and happiness. Love produces positive feelings, which help negate loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Without love, we cannot form strong relationships with our families, friends, or communities. A world without love is a dangerous world.

To practice and encourage the character strength of love with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Cheering Others’ Successes. This means when other people succeed, I am happy for them and cheer them on.

Being happy for other people when they succeed isn’t always everyone’s initial reaction. Often, it’s easy to become jealous or envious of others’ victories -- or even to experience schadenfreude, which is deriving pleasure from witnessing (or learning about) another person’s misfortune. People who have these reactions to the success or misfortune of others are colloquially known as “haters.” It’s important to note that these are natural emotions and in small doses can be helpful in allowing us to see what we care about -- and motivate us to pursue those goals.

But making a commitment towards cheering on other people’s successes can be a great way to improve our own health, happiness, and relationships. People can take active steps to be more genuinely happy for the achievements of others. Ways to do this include; telling others about the success of your modest friend; noticing when your reaction to a sibling’s success is envy or jealousy -- and asking yourself why that is; reminding yourself that appreciating the excellence in another is a character strength; asking your successful teammates and classmates what they do to prepare for games or tests.

Being supportive of people who succeed is good for our mental, physical, and emotional well-being and when people cheer each other on it begins a reciprocal process that forges stronger relationships. Those relationships are the foundation for a strong culture in teams, schools, and businesses.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We cannot believe that we are already half way through the school year! We are thrilled with the progress our students are making every single day and look forward to all of the growth and excitement in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Yesterday, our 2nd grade students did an incredible job sharing their poems at the Poetry Slam in our cafeteria. We were so proud of the work our teachers did to support their students through the writing process and prepare them for reading the poems aloud in front of ALL of the other 2nd grade students. Kudos to the 2nd grade team!

As a reminder, Shrevewood will be closed for students tomorrow for a teacher workday. We will see our students next Monday, January 29, for the start of the third quarter. We are looking forward to a full week of school together!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Forgiveness.  Forgiveness means you forgive those who have done wrong and you accept that people make mistakes.

Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured, and allow yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you. Forgiveness can often be seen as a selfless act, but it also carries many benefits for those who practice it. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has hurt them. Forgiveness is often rooted in the idea that all people are valuable and worthy of a second chance. Many who forgive have the ability to consider things from another’s perspective.

The ability to reconcile differences and move forward positively is a trait of any effective group. When people work together, conflict is inevitable. However, when people value each other’s contribution and believe in the group’s goal, they become more capable of moving past conflict toward genuinely positive behavior. A group member’s willingness to forgive imperfections of both other members and the group as a whole contribute to overall success.

To practice and encourage the character strength of forgiveness with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

student transfer is valid for one year only. A parent or guardian must submit a renewal application each year for student transfer consideration. A renewal application may be submitted for students who continue to meet the same student transfer criteria as indicated on the original student transfer request. For students no longer meeting the same student transfer criteria, a new transfer request must be submitted.

All students will be considered eligible for student transfer renewal unless the principal indicates a student is not eligible for renewal in the Online Student Transfer Application Admin View or the transfer type does not allow for renewal e.g. graduating, moving from one level to another, or family relocation.

Letters from the principal will be automatically generated from the online student transfer application in February for students eligible and not eligible for renewal and sent to the enrolling parents primary email address.

For detailed information regarding the renewal process, please visit the Online Student Transfer Application: Renewal Process webpage.

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Social Intelligence. Social intelligence means you are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. You understand why they do things.

Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people. This type of intelligence can take place “in the moment” of face-to-face conversations but also appears during times of deliberate thinking. It involves emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

Social intelligence helps individuals build relationships -- and is important to numerous aspects of a person’s life. It allows an individual to form friendships and alliances. And it assists a person against being taken advantage of. People with social intelligence can “read” other people’s faces and know what motivates them. Social intelligence builds over time and as a person ages. In this sense, it is similar to the character strength of perspective.

To practice and encourage the character strength of social intelligence with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing our Social Worker, Heather Colby ([email protected]), can assist you. You can also call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. The multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.
