Dear Shrevewood Families,

We hope everyone had a wonderful three-day weekend. We know that it was an eventful week for our students and families as they learned about the history of Martin Luther King Jr. and were able to have classroom discussions about the inauguration.

Yesterday, at the School Board work session dates were shared for in-person return of students. As we get closer to the dates that students will be returning, we will have Q&A sessions for parents. Stay tuned for information.

Have a wonderful weekend!

"Go Paperless" Progress Reports

The “Go Paperless” option is still available to all ES parents to allow them to only receive online progress reports. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for ES students and report cards for secondary students. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to:

  1. Log into ParentVUE,
  2. Then go to “My Account”
  3. Select "Go Paperless"

All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports. Tech Help & Supports

We know that as we move through Virtual Learning, technology issues arise. If you're having trouble with your FCPS laptop, here's a few things to try:

  1. Restart your computer! (We have found that this solves MANY of our problems - including those microphone, camera, and sound issues!)
  2. Visit this webpage to checkout some self-help guides!
  3. FCPS has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.
  4. If you still cannot get your laptop working, students and/or parents can submit an IT support ticket to get help with district digital resources or your FCPS issued laptop.  Find the portal here.

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding!

Keeping Your Laptop Working:
In order for your child’s laptop to continue to work properly, it needs to be restarted while connected to FCPS WiFi. You or your child can connect to FCPS WiFi at any FCPS school by sitting in the parking lot close to the building. Once the laptop connects, restart it 2-3 times so that it can automatically download updates that will keep it running well. You can connect to a school’s WiFi at any time, including nights and weekends.

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We hope everyone had a good week! We are excited to share that many of our staff will begin receiving the COVID vaccine over the next few weeks. We do not have any updates as to when students will return to in-person learning, and we are hopeful that with the vaccine the return will happen sooner rather than later. The School Board will review the Return to School plan the beginning of February.

Just a reminder that there is no school next week on Monday and Wednesday and on Friday there is a 2 hour early release.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Shrevewood Families,

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had safe and fun-filled holiday season.

During the school board meeting on Tuesday, Dr. Brabrand and the board made the decision to pause in-person instruction for all students since the community transmission of COVID-19 in Fairfax County remains high. Dr. Brabrand will provide an update on the Return to School plan to the School Board on Tuesday, February 2.

Because the county will not be transporting students to school during the pause in our plan, we will not be moving to the new bell schedule on January 12. We will continue to use the current bell schedule and will communicate any future changes to the bell schedule in advance.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Joshua DeSmyter & Tylea Holley

Schedule Updates
  • Monday, January 11 asynchronous school day for all students. Students do need to login to their classrooms on January 11. Independent work will be provided by classroom teachers.
  •  January 12, Shrevewood will keep our current bell schedule right now.  School hours are not being changes as originally proposed by the county.

Orchestra Information

Greetings from Heather Yacovissi and Elizabeth Fogel, the Orchestra teachers at Thoreau MS and Kilmer MS! We are writing to invite you to consider orchestra as part of your child's middle school course of study. Please view our introduction videos by clicking the following links:

Taking Orchestra class offers students a chance to gain new musical skills on the violin, viola, cello, or string bass, make friends, attend a fun field trip to an amusement park, and so much more! Playing a musical instrument is also associated with strong academic success, increased student self-confidence, and a sense of place and purpose within the middle school community.

Best of all, at Thoreau and Kilmer, there is a place for EVERY student, from total beginners through highly advanced players. No musical experience is necessary for students to enjoy all that our classes have to offer. All students need to do is select "ORCHESTRA" as their first choice of elective during middle school class sign-up and we will take care of the rest!

Please complete the Google Form at this link to express interest in Orchestra.

On January 13th from 7:00-7:45 PM, we will hold a Live Question and Answer Session on BBCU for all students interested in Orchestra. Current strings students, as well as prospective orchestra students are invited.

  • A personalized BBCU link for the meeting will be emailed to the parent email addresses provided in the form above. Please look for a message from "Blackboard Collaborate Ultra."
  • All who are interested in orchestra should complete the form, regardless of whether they plan to attend on the 13th.
  • During the meeting, we will provide additional details about orchestra class and answer your questions. Students are welcome to attend but must attend with their parent or guardian.

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We hope this message finds you and your family healthy and safe. There was a School Board work session yesterday. Here is the link for the slide deck presentation from the School Board meeting last night for you to reference. We wanted to highlight a couple of important points for you. A plan was shared to bring students cohort groups by grade level back into the building beginning in mid January. Once student cohorts begin returning, our bell schedule will change. Our most likely adjusted bell schedule would be 10:05pm-4:50pm. Again, our bell schedule will only change when student cohorts begin returning to the building. Please be on the lookout for information over the next several weeks and opportunities to attend Q&A sessions with both of us.

This year certainly has had its share of plan changes. As we know, change is the only constant. And, we also know that change and uncertainty can cause frustration and anxiety. Dear Shrevewood Families,

I hope you and your families enjoyed the Thanksgiving Break.  Each year, our staff and community help support families with donations during this holiday season. We have had a tremendous amount of donations delivered this week to the school for our families. Thank you to all our staff and community for your support and efforts to make this holiday season special for our entire Shrevewood community.

As we enter December, we continue to navigate schedule adjustments for the upcoming returning cohorts based on health metrics in Fairfax County.  Currently, we are still on a pause with regard to Cohort 5, Preschool and kindergarten and for Cohort 6, first and second grades.  Thresholds for student Groups can be found here.

In the meantime, we will continue with our virtual schedule.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Dear Shrevewood Community,

It's hard to believe that next week is Thanksgiving! This year has certainly been an unusual one with numerous challenges, and yet there is still so much to be thankful for. We are thankful for our wonderful staff whose dedication to our students makes a difference each and every day. We are also thankful for our supportive parent community and outstanding students. In times of challenge it is important to look for the joy, and we have plenty to be joyful about!

For those of you that sent messages of appreciation this week, it meant a great deal to the staff member who received that message. What a great way to express how THANKFUL you are for a SWES staff member! On behalf of all Shrevewood Elementary Staff, we appreciate you deeply.

Stay safe, healthy, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter

Tweet of the Week

Hello Shrevewood Families,

We realize that making an updated decision for In-Person Concurrent instruction versus All-Virtual instruction is a difficult one- given the fact that there are still many unknowns about the details. Below you find a link to update your preference for return to school. The link will be closed at the end of the day on November 4. Please know that all information that was shared last night was based on what we knew as of 10/26/20 and is subject to change as conditions change.

As I have responded to many of you already, the million dollar question we are getting is, “Will my child’s teacher stay the same if we choose _______?” We discussed last night in our Parent Coffee that we want to do our best to make sure that our students stay with their current teachers if we can make that happen. We are all doing the best we can to make decisions based on what is best for our students – while taking into consideration the capacity and health considerations of our teachers and instructional staff.  All of this to say that there is not an easy recipe for this work!  What I can promise you is that we remain committed to knowing, loving and teaching your children.

The slides and the recording of the Parent Coffee are below. One important note is that all of the questions that were submitted prior to the Parent Coffee have been answered at the end of the slides and as well as the questions we did not get to in the chat.

Together and with continued grace and compassion,

Joshua DeSmyter

Principal

Principal

Hello Shrevewood Families,

This week our PTA purchased jackets for our amazing custodial crew. Our custodians have been working tirelessly to make sure our building is ready for our small cohort of students transitioning into the building next week. Thank you to the PTA for collaborating with us to help our custodians feel appreciated!

We are thrilled to welcome our first cohort of students back to the building starting on Monday, October 26. For more information about the Phased In Plan for Return to School, please follow this link to the School Board presentation made on Thursday, October 15. Here is the link to the recording of Dr. Brabrand’s Town Hall held on Monday, October 19 with a focus on the Return to School.  As information develops, I will be sure to share the Shrevewood specific updates with the our community.

Forms Needed for Every Student

If you have not already done so, please complete the following FCPS forms that we need for all students. Forms can be completed electronically and submitted scanned and emailed to  ShrevewoodElem.Attendance@fcps.eduor drop it by the front office between 9-3.

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

The Health Information Form and the Emergency Care Information form  provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses utilize the information contained to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.

SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form

Parents and guardians, please review the Student Rights and Responsibilities and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr. After reviewing the information, fill out the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form using this link we have provided.  The form must be filled out one time per student.Printed copies of the Family Guide as well as the translated version of the document will not be available until October.

As the school year begins virtually, it is important to remember these forms are required for all students for SY 20-21 and are available for electronic submission by parents via their FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard) accounts within the weCare@school (weCare) module.

Advanced Academics

Shrevewood hosted a Virtual Information Night about Advanced Academics on Monday evening.  Click on the link to listen to the presentation!  AAP Parent Information Night.

Click here to find the Level IV referral form and Parent Questionnaire for Level IV Full-time AAP Services (Spring Screening).  Referral forms are due via email to ardone@fcps.edu by midnight on December 1, 2020.

SWES- Trick or Treat Trivia

Everyone is welcome to participate - Special Education will join the night of their grade level. Links to join online sessions will be provided before the event. And, while costumes are optional, they're certainly encouraged!

Each trivia session will be grade-specific. Mark your calendars and join in with your classmates per the schedule below:

  • Monday October 26th: 1st grade (6-7pm), 6th grade (7:30-8:30pm)
  • Tuesday October 27th: 2nd grade (6-7pm), 5th grade (7:30-8:30pm)
  • Wednesday October 28th: 3rd grade (6-7pm), 4th grade (7:30-8:30pm)
  • Thursday October 29th: Kindergarten (6-7pm)
Digital Progress Reports

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to all ES parents to allow them to only receive online progress reports starting the first quarter of SY 20/21. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for ES students and report cards for secondary students. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless" All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian has already selected “Go Paperless” for their secondary student, the option will now apply to any ES siblings as well.

#TweetoftheWeek! Message From Administration

Hello Shrevewood Family,

We hope everyone had another wonderful week! Our Shrevewood students and teachers continue to remain committed to distance learning and we couldn't be more proud of our efforts as a school community.  As you may have heard, some small cohorts of students are beginning to return to schools in person. Our enhanced autism program and ESOL level 1 students will be the first cohort of students who will start back in the building the week of October 26.  The School Board and FCPS Leadership team will continue to develop plans for our other cohorts of students. Once those details have been finalized and approved, we will share that information with our Shrevewood community. In the meantime, we will continue to provide an engaging online learning experience for our students.

We appreciate your ongoing support of your children and Shrevewood Elementary School.  As always, please don't hesitate to contact Ms. Holley or me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mr. DeSmyter and Ms. Holley

Monday, October 19 Update

On Monday October 19 all students will work asynchronously. SWES teachers are required to complete a county professional development and will be planning in the morning. All students should log into Google Classroom to access their asynchronous learning for the day.  All virtual instruction will continue as normal on Tuesday.

AAP Virtual Information Night Advanced Academics

AAP Services are in full swing!  Everyone is receiving challenge with Critical and Creative Thinking strategy lessons and rigorous experiences through level I services.  Level II services are being provided in math and or language arts through small groups and modified assignments for eligible students.  Students that are eligible for level III services are meeting with Mrs. Done once a week during Specialized Instruction while also receiving differentiated instruction in the classroom.   It is an exciting year for all students to participate in the AAP program!

Dining for Dollars

Dining for Dollars is back at Ledo Pizza Tuesday, October 20th and Wednesday, October 21st from 5pm-9pm. Take either, or both, nights off from cooking and grab dinner from Ledo Pizza in Falls Church. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Shrevewood PTA.

Breaks for Students During the Day

We know that the virtual school days are long, and students are building their online stamina. Teachers are working to provide students with screen breaks and movement breaks throughout the day, in addition to their asynchronous time and lunch/recess. Here are a few ideas about how your child could use these break times. We will provide more ideas and resources in future Terragrams!

  • Set a timer! Or, be sure you can hear your computer if your teacher has already set a timer (especially if your break is during a class).
  • Move! Get away from the computer screen (or any screen) and use the break time to move your body.
  • Get outside! If you can, try an outdoor activity.
  • Brain break! Try an off-screen activity to refocus and re-energize.

Move!

Get outside!

Brain break!

ABC’s of Body Breaks

Take a fall nature walk. Walk outside for 10-15 minutes. How many different color leaves can you find and collect?

Find a deck of cards. Sort the cards into a pattern

OR

Create a new card game to share with your family.

Listen to a favorite song or two. Have a dance party!

Grab your lunch, a book, and a blanket. Find a spot to eat lunch & enjoy some outdoor reading time.

Act of kindness: See if you can help someone with a job they need done.

Visit GoNoodle and choose 3 (or more) of your favorite videos to get moving!

Race… but try not to run! Instead, choose a different type of walk like skipping or a crab walk!

Do an arts and crafts project with materials you have around you. What can you create?

Critical and Creative Thinking Strategies Digital Progress Reports

Message From Administration

Dear Shrevewood Community,

Thank you for all of your patience and grace as we have begun the school year with a strong virtual start. We have had excellent “attendance” … many days, 95-100% of our 735 students are online! We have had many questions from parents/caregivers wondering how they (and older siblings) can support their child during virtual learning. Every few weeks, we will compile a few tips and suggestions that we hope you will find helpful.

At this point in the year, teachers have established routines and positive learning communities. We will now be teaching more content and engaging students in more academic rigor. We very much appreciate your support from home and think these tips will help you and your child.

Tip #1: Encourage independence- In order for your child’s teacher to know what he/she knows and needs, we need to know that he/she is attempting the work independently.
Tip #2: Please allow children to make mistakes- This is how our brains grow! If older siblings or parents are giving students the right answers all the time, children’s brains aren’t growing!
Tip #3: Independence now translates to independence when we return- Teachers are working to create virtual classrooms that will allow for students to be successful when they return and we know how important it is for students to learn to try things on their own in a classroom setting.

We also ask that you communicate with your child’s teacher via email or the class communication tool that is used – not in the chat during class time. Please know he/she will respond to your requests and questions as soon as they can within 24-48 hours. Our teachers need your continued grace and compassion so they can do the very best job for your children…and we promise to give you our grace and compassion as you work to navigate virtual schooling from home.

Thank you for your support and kindness.

Remember at Shrevewood we are about Family, Excellence and Relationships!

Joshua DeSmyter and Tylea Holley

P.S. Thank you to all of you who have sent our teachers positive notes and emails over the last few weeks. You have NO IDEA how much those notes and words mean and they are often exactly what the teacher needs to get through the day!

Grab and Go Meals at SWES Free and Reduced-Price Meals
